An external womb, will change the nature of human reproduction...

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/sep/04/artifical-womb-women-ectogenesis-baby-fertility

"Once parental roles are equal, there will be no excuse for male-dominated boardrooms or political parties, or much of the other blatant inequality we see today." -- I wonder if this will turn out to be true.

To paraphrase Douglass Adams: Man has always assumed he was better than woman because of high-powered careers; loyalty to sports teams; and the status tokens of cash, cloths and cars. Whereas Woman has always believed she is better than Man for precisely the same reasons…

Searching for this Simulation's God

Simulation Theory and the scientific pursuit of God.
https://thenextweb.com/distract/2017/07/06/simulation-hypothesis-and-the-search-for-god/#.tnw_k8m91JG8

Elon Musk, Nick Bostrom, Neil Degrasse-Tyson and many others believe the chances that we are living in a simulation is close to 100%.
I don't think it actually matters whether we are in base reality, a Microverse, Miniverse, or Tinyverse... but you will have to read my books to out find why.

Visualizing a decent life on the moon.

NASA Judged, Moontopia Competition - Winner

These images kind of make me want to sign up as a pioneer...
OK, scratch that. Realistically, I guess I mean write a SciFi story about somebody else signing up.

"The Testlab settlement is based on the idea of the Russian Babushka Doll — one layer protects the next. On the very inside of the settlement are the Pods, which inhabit the private sleeping quarters, the communal rooms, the greenhouse, as well as the experimental labs and the necessary machinery to sustain life on the moon. Between the pods and the outer most protective membrane is the void that acts as yet another protective layer between livable and unlivable space."

I actually think I like the Runner up even more:
"The moon has abundant resources on the moon... [but] it is has always had a significant meaning to us, and therefore its original state must be highly respected and preserved as much as possible. Therefore we propose a space station not built directly on the surface but orbiting around the moon with a cable linked to the surface"

My #top100 #scifi Num:48 The Robots of Dawn

Amazon: http://amzn.to/2gYlBGa

Spoiled by reliance on robots, lacking a spirit of adventure the human colonisation of the galaxy has ground to a halt. I tend to think the Fermi Paradox is all about apathy in the end, this book might have been the seed that planted the idea.

Asimov begins tying his worlds together here with the first mention of psychohistory...

My #top100 #scifi Num:49 Robots and Empire

Amazon: http://amzn.to/2fW12ch

Another Asimov classic. This one ties the Robots series and the Empire series together. One of my favourites. Daneel and Giskard wrestling with the laws of Robotics, basically the ethics of AI.
Lots of philosophy, but not too heavy, and plenty of Space Opera to liven things up.

My #top100 #scifi Num:50 The Stars Like Dust

Amazon: http://amzn.to/2fWakF9

Space Opera Thriller Mystery. An innocent and nieve fairy tale set amongst the stars. Chronologically this is one of the Empire books, it takes place early on, before Trantor, the fall and the Foundation...

Another blast from the past, but good stuff. Enjoy!

Dogs Understand Tone And Meaning Of Words

Dogs understand not just the tone, but also the meaning of words.

"Dogs process both what we say and how we say it in a way which is amazingly similar to how human brains do."

This is a key theme in the Singularity's Children series - forget aliens for the time being (its OK, calm down, they are coming!) we are already not alone - animals are much smarter than we give them credit for.

The End of the Nation State. Brexit could be the harbinger of a post-national world.

"... there is a growing feeling among economists, political scientists and even national governments that the nation-state is not necessarily the best scale on which to run our affairs. We must manage vital matters like food supply and climate on a global scale, yet national agendas repeatedly trump the global good. At a smaller scale, city and regional administrations often seem to serve people better than national governments."

I live in Switzerland. Here there is a smooth transition from local to national governance. The research seems to support the idea that a fractal, hierarchical, system allows people close to the issues to make the best choices.

"...Switzerland’s 26 cantons, for example, which have different languages and religions, meet Bar-Yam’s spatial stability test – except one. A French-speaking enclave in German-speaking Berne experienced the only major unrest in recent Swiss history. It was resolved by making it a separate canton, Jura, which meets the criteria."

"... in any hierarchy, the person at the top has to be able to get their head around the whole system. When systems are too complex for one human mind to grasp... they must evolve from hierarchies into networks where no one person is in charge."

Unwieldy central government, restrictive and bureaucratic, is old hat. Technology must deliver agile, Peer 2 Peer, network alternatives.

Denial (Singularity's Children Part 1)

Part 1 of Singularity's Children.
available for pre-order and scheduled for publication: July 28, 2016
Available at Amazon.

An oblique but familiar future. Biotech and neural interfaces have given voice to locked-in intelligences, mosquitos are subsidised and the internet is dying. It is a world desiccated by soulless algorithms, pacified beneath the battle-suit's boot and numbed by the bewitching voice of computational propaganda.

Struggling for dignity and against irrelevance, rebellious minds must seek meaning beyond the cultural desert:

Stella Sagong struggles with poverty and exploitation, while living above a brothel on a huge floating tuna farm.

Niato Musiani, rejecting privilege allows himself to be recruited into a life of eco-insurgency.

Keith Wilson attempts to cling onto his archaic sense of ethics while grinding against suffocation by corporate morality.

Hipster Timeshare

Real Estate in the Cloud?

"Perhaps we’re about to see an emerging breed of young professionals that work remotely, ditch their lease ... live exclusively ... bouncing between Miami and Madrid with a laptop and a single suitcase."

Rent the house on AirBnB and travel the world like a digital vagabond?
I am probably an edge case, but this has a certain appeal to me.

DAC - Distributed Autonomous Corporations

Without human management Autonomous Corporations will fund their infrastructure with profits from the services they provide.

Each will issue its own currency which will derive value from its exclusive ability to purchase the DAC's services. The DAC will pay the crowd with its own floating currency to provide servers and networking for its compute and bandwidth needs.

The possibilities are mind boggling. I suspect one day our own minds will be DACs, paying for their computational substrate with back-breaking work in the 'salt mines'.

Free Gold

Negative interest rates, wholesale printing of currency, paper commodity markets a thousand times oversubscribed, unsustainable national debts and pointless austerity...

...any sane person must look at the financial system of the world as it currently stands and wonder how the hell this is all going to end.

But it's OK. They big boys know what they are doing.
There is an audacious plan to reset the global financial machinery.
Its been running for over a decade.

Taller, Deeper, Greener.

I am trying to think forward 50 years or so for a new book.

Taller, deeper and greener seem to be the generally accepted trends. But this misses the alienation technology and architecture are causing in our collective psyche. I want to explore the idea of libertarian micro nations, e.g. http://www.seasteading.org and how technology, freedom and architecture play off each other.

Architecture and Social planning can help recast the world at a human scale. In a village, anytime from 20K BC to 100 years ago, anybody interested in performing in front off an audience could learn to play the guitar or source a tambourine. If they were good: people would listen, tap their feet and sway smiling. If they were great: people would travel a whole day to come from the neighbouring villages just to listen. Fulfilment within reach of all. And a good carpenter or painter would have had the same opportunities.

These days, with 7 Billion people sharing and posting to Youtube - even if you are great, there will be another 100K people better, prettier or luckier - who do the same as you do, probably while also riding a unicycle or playing a ukulele. Everybody ends up listening to the same few acts. These egos become hyper inflated and out of touch, while the majority, seeking the same recognition that has already been gobbled up, whither into depression or end up in a cubicle.

Both intellectually and physically we need to operate at a much more human scale.

Perhaps a hierarchical devolution of power to communities and a greater focus on local activity will help close The Great Divide. (I realise that Mr. Stiglitz is discussing economic inequality, but the message remains the same).

Non Human Rights

Corporations are disembodied, cold legal constructs. Despite their alien nature, and their tendency to exhibit psychopathic behaviour, they are classed as people with freedom of speech, and even some form of freedom of religion.
Whereas Chimps are warm bodied, emotional primates who share 98% of our DNA, and like us love, grieve and care for their infirm. They even look like us - yet are have no rights and are often kept in appalling conditions.

Recently there have been signs that as a society we might be ready to broaden the concept of personhood to include our cousins. In a sense this is the extension of civil rights to other entities.

As a Sci-Fi author future developments in this direction are fascinating. A porous boarder between various types of people: human; animal; algorithmic; (and alien), is great world building and back story.

Basic Income - Teaching a Robot to Fish

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life. Build a robot to fish and...?

As I have said before, this world is increasingly bleak and hostile to standard v1.1 Homo Sapiens - Corporations exploit both customers and employees. Unemployment soars. The gap between rich and poor grows. Science and tech are increasingly beyond understanding. Its all Bladerunner and Aliens.

The 'Basic Income' movement is the blue eyed future as it should be. It feels like something out of a Star Trek utopia:
"What is this 'Money' you speak of?" or
"You mean on your planet people have to work? Here people work because they want to..."
